In collaboration with the University of Colorado, etectRx has made significant strides in advancing medication adherence monitoring through the QUANTI-TAF study (NCT04065347). Recently published in Clinical Infectious Diseases1 and the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology2, the QUANTI-TAF study focused on antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among persons with HIV (PWH) receiving daily oral tenofovir alafenamide/emtricitabine (TAF/FTC)-based ART for at least six months.

Over the course of the study, more than 9,000 ID-Cap® System ingestions contributed to a robust assessment of adherence. 84 participants actively used the ID-Cap System for approximately 4 months each. By combining the digital pill data with drug concentrations, the research team was able to accurately quantify tenofovir-diphosphate and emtricitabine-triphosphate in dried blood spots (DBS) at each visit according to adherence level1. Overall, adherence in the study was greater than 90%, and more than 90% of ingestions were detected by the ID-Cap System (as opposed to manually entered)2. The study also found that HIV-1 RNA (plasma viral load) remained suppressed (<200 copies/mL) even in cases of intermittent non-adherence, as measured by the ID-Cap System, reinforcing the potential for digital pill technologies in future research on HIV treatment strategies.

This study highlights the growing promise of digital health innovations by both enhancing medication adherence as well as offering critical insights into the effectiveness of ART regimens in real-world settings.

Our previous and ongoing HIV prevention clinical trials are just one example of the ID-Cap System making a difference in HIV PrEP non-adherence.

While the previous ID-Cap component design employed a wearable Reader in the form of a necklace, the evolution of the Wrist-Worn Reader provides a more functional and convenient solution. The Wrist-Worn Reader aims to revolutionize the ID-Cap System component capabilities by catering to different user preferences and lifestyles, making medication adherence technology more adaptable into everyday life.
QUANTI-TAF began in August 2020, and the last follow-up concluded in May 2023. A total of 84 participants were enrolled in the study for up to 4 months each, resulting in 8,910 expected ingestions over 9,049 days monitored, and a cumulative adherence rate of 95%. The QUANTI-TAF study showed consistently high acceptability of the ID-Cap System over time, as participants used it for up to approximately 112 days (4 months).

Data from University of Colorado’s QUANTI-TAF study demonstrates significant milestones for the ID-Cap System with a reputation for demonstrating strong results and providing data to accurately track patients’ adherence to their oral medications. “The ID-Cap System was central to our QUANTI-TAF study; we used the digital pill data to establish adherence benchmarks for our drug concentrations, which was a key outcome of our study,” said Peter Anderson, PharmD- Antiviral Pharmacology, Professor at University of Colorado Anshutz Medical Campus.

etectRx gained FDA clearance for its innovative ID-Cap System technology in December 2019. Since FDA clearance, the technology has generated strong, accurate results across multiple indications, particularly with patient populations with traditionally poor levels of medication adherence, including those with substance abuse disorders.

The partnership sees the integration of AARDEX’s adherence analytics software with etectRx’s ingestible adherence sensor

Liege, Belgium (APRIL 28th, 2022) – Belgium-based AARDEX® Group, the leader in measuring and managing medication adherence in clinical trials today announced a strategic partnership with etectRx, Inc. This new collaboration combines etectRx’s ingestible event marker, the ID-Cap System, and AARDEX® Group’s MEMS® Adherence Software (MEMS AS®) to track medication-taking behaviors. Together, they provide a holistic, objective, and precise method to measure and manage adherence to solid form dose medications.

etectRx, Inc joins other partners as part of AARDEX® Group’s ever-growing, robust ecosystem of Medication Adherence Hardware. The FDA-cleared ID-Cap System features a capsule with an embedded ingestible wireless sensor, called the ID-Tag. When swallowed, the sensor transmits a low-power digital message from inside the stomach. Under the AARDEX® Group integration, the captured data can be transmitted to the MEMS AS®, software which harnesses proprietary algorithms to help sponsors understand patient dosing patterns. Healthcare teams can then use this information to risk-stratify patients, deliver targeted interventions, and boost medication adherence.

Since COVID-19 reshaped the research industry, there has been an uptick in the need for solutions that can allow sponsors to deliver trials remotely. In this scenario, where some or all in-person visits are off the table, poor medication adherence could present as an issue. Medication non-adherence leads to poor outcomes in routine care and can jeopardize the success of clinical research. The pharmaceutical industry needs data-driven solutions that will help patients remain adherent to their oral medications. This is particularly true in clinical trials, where the primary source of trial failure is an inability to demonstrate efficacy.[1]

Bernard Vrijens, CEO & Scientific Lead, AARDEX, comments: “We are delighted to add etectRx to our growing, global medication adherence ecosystem. By linking our medication monitoring software to their ingestible sensors, we are adding a valuable partner to our global ecosystem of smart packages and devices to cover all routes of drug administration.

At AARDEX®, we believe improving healthcare outcomes is about team collaboration, which is why we have an active focus on partnering with industry leaders like etectRx.”

Eric Buffkin, President and CEO of etectRx adds: “etectRx recognizes the deep experience and expertise of the AARDEX team and their passion to improve medication adherence. The combination of our ID-Cap System feeding real-time, confirmed dosing information to AARDEX’s suite of adherence software will provide a powerful tool for biopharma and CRO’s.”

The webinar, moderated by Stefanie Kuhner of Bristol-Myers Squibb, had 81 registrants from across the pharma and clinical world. Just as attendees learned about etectRx and our digital pill technology, etectRx learned from webinar participants.

During the discussion, etectRx polled the audience, concluding that 89% of participants said their opinions of digital pills and digital pill systems was positive because of the presentation. The majority of listeners saw digital pill systems positively in real and current time.

The majority of registrants also disclosed that their companies are not currently evaluating digital pill systems, with one-third of webinar participants recording that they would be advocates for a demonstration project using a digital pill system.
